Before You Cook

Cooking Guidelines

To ensure food safety, the FDA recommends the following as minimum internal cooking temperatures:

  • Steak and Pork 145° F (rest cooked meat, 3 minutes) |
  • Seafood 145° F |
  • Chicken 165° F |
  • Ground Beef 160° F |
  • Ground Turkey 165° F |
  • Ground Pork 160° F

Customize It Instructions

  • If using ground beef, break up until beef reaches minimum internal temperature, 4-6 minutes. 

  • If using ground turkey, break up until turkey reaches minimum internal temperature, 6-8 minutes. 

  • If using steak strips, pat dry, coarsely chop, then separate pieces. Stir occasionally until steak reaches minimum internal temperature, 4-6 minutes. Rest, 3 minutes.

    Cook the Pasta

    Once water is boiling, add pasta and cook until al dente, 8-10 minutes.

    Remove from burner. Reserve 3/4 cup pasta cooking water. Drain pasta in a colander/strainer and set aside.

    While pasta cooks, continue recipe.

    Prepare the Ingredients

    Halve and peel onion. Cut halves into 1/4" dice.

    Mince garlic.

    Cook the Pork

    Place a medium pot over medium heat and add 2 tsp. olive oil.

    Add onions, 1/4 tsp. salt, and ground pork to hot pot. Break up meat until no pink remains and pork reaches a minimum internal temperature of 160 degrees, 5-7 minutes.

    Add the Sauce

    Add garlic to hot pot. Stir occasionally until fragrant, 30-60 seconds.

    Add 1/3 cup reserved pasta cooking water, crushed tomatoes, brown sugar, Italian seasoning, 1/2 tsp. salt, and a pinch of pepper. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.

    Once simmering, cover, reduce heat to low, and stir occasionally, 15 minutes.

    Add Pasta and Finish Dish

    Stir butter (to taste) into hot pot until melted and combined, 30-60 seconds.

    If sauce is too thick, add additional reserved pasta cooking water, 1 Tbsp. at a time, until desired consistency is reached.

    Add pasta and stir occasionally until coated and heated through, 1-2 minutes.

    Remove from burner.

    Plate dish as pictured on front of card, garnishing with cheese. Bon appétit!
