1 Prepare the Ingredients
Peel and cut potatoes into large evenly-sized chunks.
Trim and thinly slice green onions on an angle, keeping white and green portions separate. -
2 Make the Mashed Potatoes
Bring a medium pot with potato chunks and 1/2 tsp. salt covered by water to a boil.
Once boiling, cook until fork-tender, 14-18 minutes.Remove from burner. Reserve 1/4 cup potato cooking water. Drain potatoes in a colander/strainer and return to pot.Add sour cream, 1/2 tsp. salt, a pinch of pepper, and 2 Tbsp. reserved potato cooking water. Mash until combined and smooth. If too thick, add additional reserved potato cooking water, 1 tsp. at a time, until desired consistency is reached. While potatoes cook, continue recipe. -
3 Cook the Ground Beef
Place a large oven-safe non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
Add ground beef to hot, dry pan. Break up meat until no pink remains and beef reaches a minimum internal temperature of 160 degrees, 4-6 minutes.Add flour and stir until no dry flour remains. -
4 Add the Vegetables and Broth
Stir tomato puree into hot pan until combined, 2-3 minutes.
Add white portions of green onions and half the green portions of green onions (reserve remaining for garnish). Stir occasionally until combined, 1-2 minutes.Add carrots, peas, chicken base, savory seasoning, 1 1/2 cups water, 1/4 tsp. salt, and a pinch of pepper. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.Once simmering, cover and cook until carrots are tender, 3-5 minutes.Remove from burner. -
5 Broil Pie and Finish Dish
Evenly top ground beef mixture with mashed potatoes. You may also transfer beef mixture and potato topping to a medium oven-safe casserole dish, if desired.
Transfer pie to hot broiler and broil until potatoes have slightly browned, 2-4 minutes.Don't text and broil! Keep an eye on oven as potatoes may burn easily under broiler.Carefully remove from broiler. Pan handle will be hot! Use an oven mitt.Plate dish as pictured on front of card, topping pie with remaining green portions of green onions. Bon appétit!
